You can become competitive by cutting wages, but that doesn't make you more productive or innovative. Competitiveness is a fool's wager — a zero-sum game by definition.

This trade war from the Americans might have been motivated by faulty or opportunistic logic — maybe even by a very nasty person. But still, should we take this as a wake-up call? Should we be thinking about reducing our trade surplus with America? Or, on the contrary, should we see this as a moment to stand together as Europeans against the Americans, because they are trying to take us for a ride.
